Mustafa Hijri’s latest interview
In his most recent interview, Mustafa Hijri, the leader of PDKI, says that although there are people who want reform in Iran, the theocratic system of government is antithetical to genuine reform.
He thinks one should make a distinction between the demonstrators, who want fundamental change, and Mousavi and other leaders of the Green Movement. Hijri mentions that Mousavi has explicitly and repeatedly stated that he wants to turn Iran back to the time of Ayatollah Khomeni and he has also explicitly, through his website, warned that demonstrates should not shout slogans against the Islamic Republic.
Prior to the June presidential election – which Hijri regards as nothing but institutionalized power struggle between the factions and individuals of the Islamic regime – the PDKI called on the Kurdish people to boycott the election. In fact, in a televised interview a 20 days before the election, Hijri predicted that Ahmadinejad had already been (s)elected as President. Hijri sees no real difference between Mousavi and Ahmadinejad. The only difference may be that Ahmadinejad is fanatically loyal to Khameni.
Hijri predicts that the Islamic Republic, like other dictatorships, will fall. He believes that there are two impediments; one is that some people in Iran have still not realized that calls for reform are only playing into the hands of other elements of the regime, who, just like Ahmadinejad, wants to preserve the theocracy; the second is lack of organized resistance, which enables the regime to prevent the demonstrations to transform into lasting, more broad-based and effective actions against the regime.
